Masks with feminine features, such as the Deangle, are benevolent.

Dan (Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia): also known as the Yacouba.

Deangle (Côte d'Ivoire (Dan)): a benevolent spirit with feminine features, an oval face and almond-shaped eyes.

✨ What the motif tells

For the Dan, the mask allows spirits, the "ge", to take part in the lives of men. The mask is thus linked to this participation of spirits in the lives of men.

Our reinterpretation

On the cup, the mask unfolds in black and grey pencil; on the saucer, a black geometric frieze accompanies the set. The mask drawn on this piece is the Dan Mask with a braided headdress. Its Dan face has a domed forehead, slit eyes and full lips. A headdress of long braids frames this face and falls down to the chin. This cup and its saucer are decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, the motif prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table

In the soft morning light or during a shared coffee, place the cup on a light linen tablecloth and let the saucer's frieze set the rhythm of the table.
