Leopard Skin Wax Fabric (Kpo Gbaza): History, Royal Symbolism, and Meaning

Mug et tasse au motif wax Peau de léopard, taches brunes sur fond ocre, avec un léopard dessiné

Dark spots on a tawny background, and all the power of a great cat. The Leopard Skin is one of the very first designs in the history of wax. More than a century later, it has never left the stalls and remains one of the best-selling. In Benin, it is called Kpo gbaza, "the leopard skin" in Fon. And in this country, the leopard is not an animal like any other: it is the ancestor of kings.

Leopard Skin in brief

  • Type: a wax cloth, wax-printed cotton.
  • Name: Kpo gbaza, "the leopard skin" in Fon (Benin).
  • History: one of the very first designs in the history of wax.
  • Family: wedding cloths, "long live the newlyweds".
  • Symbolism: strength, elegance, royal prestige.

One of the first wax designs

When wax arrived in West Africa at the end of the 19th century, its designs were mainly inspired by Javanese batik. Very quickly, manufacturers understood that their African customers had their own tastes and their own symbols. Leopard skin is one of the very first recorded designs, and it has outlasted all fashions. Its recipe is simple and unbeatable: an animal admired by all, an easily recognizable pattern, and an elegance that never goes out of style.

The leopard, animal of kings

In many African cultures, the leopard is the animal of power. A solitary, cunning, fast, and formidable leader, it embodies mastered strength. Its skin was long reserved for kings, chiefs, and high dignitaries, who sat on it or wore it on their shoulders during ceremonies.

In Benin, the leopard holds a very special place. According to tradition, the royal dynasties of Allada, Porto-Novo, and Abomey descend from Agassou, born from the union of a princess and a leopard. The kings of Dahomey thus called themselves "children of the leopard", and the animal remained an emblem of royalty. A wedding cloth

The traders of Cotonou classify Kpo gbaza among the wedding cloths, under the "long live the newlyweds" category. It is given or worn to wish the couple strength and prestige, and to honor the family that receives. Wearing the leopard skin is a bit like presenting oneself as a queen or a king.

What Leopard Skin says

  • Strength: that of the great cat, powerful and mastered.
  • Elegance: a timeless adornment.
  • Royalty: the animal of kings and chiefs.
  • Protection: the leopard watches over its own.
