Along the edge of the round plate, a ring of black Bogolan signs—zigzags, triangles, and small geometric butterflies—stands out against the white. The center remains white, like a breath in the middle of the design. This piece is our tribute to the iconic "Bogolan" fabric.

🟫 The history of the pattern

Bogolan is a traditional Malian cotton fabric, dyed with fermented mud, whose geometric signs tell ancestral stories. Each region has its own style, from the Dogon country to Ségou.

• Bogolan (Mali, Bambara language): also called bògòlanfini.

✨ What the pattern tells

Bogolan has become a symbol of Malian cultural identity. A custom says that it protects by absorbing the dangerous forces released during a birth. It can thus be given on the occasion of a birth, echoing this custom.

Our reinterpretation

We take the Bogolan signs in a ring on the edge of the round plate, in black on a white background, with a center left white. The zigzags, triangles, and small geometric butterflies are drawn as if with mud on a light canvas, then transferred to porcelain. This plate is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, with the pattern prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table

For lunch in soft light, with a raw linen tablecloth and a few guests, the plate creates a graphic setting that interacts with the material. Giving this plate on the occasion of a birth is to pass on a gesture inspired by the protective symbolism of Bogolan.
