Speckled bowl, Gamaphone wax print – the Gramophone, red and orange colorway

In Benin, it is called “Gamaphone”: it is the gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.

At the bottom of the bowl, a large disc of small orange and ochre dots forms concentric circles around a red heart; on the inner rim, the circle continues in red and orange. The granulated exterior provides a textured finish, while the pattern is revealed on the inside. Here, we pay tribute to the iconic “Gramophone” fabric with our reinterpretation, named “Gamaphone,” pronounced in Fon (Benin), where the R is not pronounced.

🎶 One pattern, a thousand names

Discs of small dots arranged in concentric circles, like the grooves of a vinyl record: this fabric evokes the gramophone, the king of parties in days gone by. In the world of wax fabric, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give them their names.

• Gamaphone (Benin, Fon): the record player, the gramophone; its concentric circles evoke the grooves of a disc.

✨ What the pattern tells

Music, parties, the atmosphere of evenings when records are playing: that is what this pattern evokes. Its joyful, rhythmic circles seem to vibrate, echoing the tables where people gather to celebrate. A design to give as a gift and bring a little rhythm to a festive occasion.

Our reinterpretation

The large disc of orange and ochre dots with a red heart nestles at the bottom of the bowl; on the inner rim, the circle continues in red and orange on a white background. Each bowl is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, with the pattern prepared, applied and enameled by hand before firing.

At your table

In the soft light of late afternoon, on a textured tablecloth, this bowl takes its place among guests who love lively tables. As a gift, its disc pattern evokes parties and music: a thoughtful present for someone who loves entertaining around a lively table.
