Kanta (Niger, djerma) and Kounta (Niger, haoussa), two patterns that accompany the major milestones of life.

On the porcelain, a wide black-and-white crenellated border surrounds the center; mustard yellow, orange, blue, and green stripes punctuate the edge. At the bottom of the deep plate, an elephant carries the same weave. This set of six square plates is our tribute to the iconic "Kanta and Kounta" fabric (Niger, djerma and haoussa).

▤ The history of the pattern

In Niger, these narrow bands woven and sewn edge to edge feature crenellations and checkerboards that tell the stories of major ceremonies.

• Kanta (Niger, djerma): intended for the groom during wedding ceremonies.
• Kounta (Niger, haoussa): a different pattern, used as a rug or wall covering.

✨ What the pattern tells

Our reinterpretation

The wide border of the fabric becomes the edge of the plate, with its black-and-white crenellations and its mustard yellow, orange, blue, and green stripes; at the bottom of the deep plate, the elephant takes up the same weave. Our silhouette concept allows us to embed a wax fabric in the shadow of an animal: here, the elephant brings a figurative touch, while the border keeps its atmosphere. The pieces are decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville: the pattern is prepared in the workshop, then applied and glazed by hand before firing. A packaging box is provided.
