Set of 6 square plates, Toghu pattern
Set of 6 square plates, Toghu pattern
Black velvet embroidered with suns, stars, crosses, and diamonds.
On the square plate, a black band crosses the surface diagonally. Orange crosses, ochre braids and rings, diamonds and triangles stand out against the black, with touches of white. This set of six square plates is our tribute to the iconic "Toghu" fabric.
👑 The history of Toghu
Toghu is the traditional attire of the Grassfields in North-West Cameroon, around Bamenda: black velvet embroidered with yellow, orange, red, and white threads. Once reserved for kings and dignitaries, it has become Cameroon's ceremonial attire at major international events. Its exact origin remains uncertain; some sources associate it with the 19th century and the Bamoun kingdom.
- Toghu (Cameroon, North-West): the royal attire of the Grassfields in North-West Cameroon.
- Atoghu (Cameroon, North-West): another form of the name.
Its embroidery can take several weeks, or even months; a Toghu is often passed down from generation to generation.
✨ What the pattern tells
Toghu evokes the rank, dignity, and pride of the peoples of the Grassfields in North-West Cameroon; once reserved for kings, chiefs, and dignitaries. Today, it carries a symbol of Cameroonian identity and unity. It can be found at weddings, celebrations, and major international ceremonies.
Our reinterpretation
On the porcelain, the black band crosses the square plate diagonally; orange crosses, ochre braids and rings, diamonds and triangles recreate the textile's design, with touches of white. The plates are decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop: the pattern is prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing. The 31 × 31 × 10 cm box accompanies the set.
At your table
On a linen tablecloth, in soft light, the black band and the orange, ochre, and white patterns add rhythm to a table gathered around your loved ones. As a gift, this set accompanies a wedding or a major ceremony, echoing the rank, dignity, and pride carried by Toghu.
