Set of 6 square plates, Gamaphone wax print, orange and ochre colors

In Benin, it is called “Gamaphone”: it is the word for gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.

At the center of the large square plate, a disc of orange and burgundy dots opens like a sun over a veil of pearl-grey circles; the dessert and deep plates are covered with orange and ochre discs. This tableware is our tribute to the iconic “Gramophone” fabric, a reinterpretation that we have named “Gamaphone”. “Gamaphone” is the way “gramophone” is pronounced in Fon (Benin), where the R is not pronounced.

🎶 One pattern, a thousand names

Discs of small dots in concentric circles, like the grooves of a vinyl record: this pagne evokes the gramophone, the king of parties in days gone by. In the world of wax, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give them their names.

• Gamaphone (Benin, Fon): the record player, the gramophone; its concentric circles evoke the grooves of a disc.

✨ What the pattern tells

Music, parties, the atmosphere of evenings when records spin. A joyful and rhythmic pattern, made of circles that seem to vibrate.

Our reinterpretation

On this piece, the full pattern unfolds into a large central disc of orange and burgundy dots on a veil of pearl-grey circles; the dessert and deep plates welcome orange and ochre discs. Each piece is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, with the pattern prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing. The whole is presented in a gift box.
