Set of 6 round plates, Adinkra pattern, caramel ochre color

In Ghana, the Gye Nyame symbol means “except God”: nothing is above him.

A wide diagonal band crosses each round plate: the Gye Nyame symbols and columns of wavy lines echo each other in caramel ochre on the white porcelain. The design unfolds in a checkerboard pattern, like a ribbon laid across the table. This set is our tribute to the iconic “Adinkra” fabric.

✦ The history of the motif

Adinkra symbols are a visual language of the Akan people in Ghana. They can be found on fabrics, jewelry, and architecture, like proverbs worn on oneself.

• Adinkra (Ghana, Akan): a visual language where each symbol encodes a proverb or a philosophical idea.
• Gye Nyame (Ghana, Akan): “except God”: the symbol of divine omnipotence, one of the most widespread.

✨ What the motif tells

The motif tells of humility and wisdom. Each Adinkra symbol carries a proverb.

Our reinterpretation

On this piece, the diagonal band takes up the Gye Nyame symbols and the columns of wavy lines, in caramel ochre and white, to bring the language of the fabric to porcelain. Each piece is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, with the motif prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing. The packaging box measures 31 × 31 × 10 cm.

At your table

Imagine a soft late-afternoon light, a natural linen tablecloth, and guests taking the time to read the symbols with their fingertips. This set offers itself as a proverb-bearing gift, for a table where humility and wisdom have their place.
