Set of 6 round plates, Adinkra pattern, red and orange colors

In Ghana, the Gye Nyame symbol means “except God”: nothing is above him.

On these round plates, a wide band of colorful checkerboard pattern surrounds a white center: red, orange, and blue diamonds, black Adinkra symbols. On the deep plates, the checkerboard pattern covers the entire surface. This piece is our tribute to the iconic “Adinkra” fabric.

✦ The history of the pattern

Adinkra symbols are a visual language of the Akan people in Ghana. They can be found on fabrics, jewelry, and architecture, serving as proverbs that one carries with them.

• Adinkra (Ghana, Akan): a visual language in which each symbol represents a proverb or philosophical idea.
• Gye Nyame (Ghana, Akan/Twi): “except God”: the symbol of divine omnipotence, one of the most widespread.

✨ What the pattern tells us

Each Adinkra symbol represents a proverb. The pattern speaks of humility and wisdom. To give this pattern is to pass on a proverb and an idea of wisdom.

Our interpretation

The checkerboard and symbols move from fabric to porcelain: on each round plate, the colorful band unfolds around the rim, leaving the white center open; on the deep plates, the full pattern covers the bottom. Red, orange, yellow, sky blue, navy blue, black, and white make up this design. Each piece is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop: the pattern is prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing. The six plates are presented in a 31 × 31 × 10 cm box.
