Breakfast set, Adinkra pattern

Breakfast set, Adinkra pattern

In Ghana, the Gye Nyame symbol means "except God" in Akan (Twi): nothing is above him.

On the square plate, the Gye Nyame symbols and columns of caramel ochre wavy lines create a frame around the white; on the large speckled bowl, the short band motif is on the inside; on the mug, it unfolds on the outside in a checkerboard pattern. This breakfast set is our tribute to the iconic Adinkra fabric.

✦ The history of the motif

Adinkra symbols are a visual language of the Akan people in Ghana. They can be found on fabrics, jewelry, and architecture, like proverbs worn on oneself.

  • Adinkra (Ghana, Akan language): a visual language where each symbol encodes a proverb or a philosophical idea.
  • Gye Nyame (Ghana, Akan (Twi) language): "except God": the symbol of divine omnipotence, one of the most widespread.

✨ What the motif tells

The symbolism chosen here is that of humility and wisdom: each Adinkra symbol carries a proverb. Giving this motif is to convey a thought that is read in the decor, without words.

Our reinterpretation

The motif moves from fabric to decor: frame on the square plate, band on the inside of the large speckled bowl, checkerboard on the outside of the mug, in caramel ochre and white. The set brings together the plate, the large bowl, and the mug. Each piece is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville: motif prepared, applied, and enameled by hand before firing.

At your table

At breakfast time, a soft light on a linen tablecloth and a few guests around the table bring out the caramel ochre on the white. As a gift, the Adinkra motif lends itself to a gesture that carries a proverb and a thought of humility and wisdom.
