Breakfast box, Ntshak pattern – le Velours Kuba

Breakfast box, Ntshak pattern – le Velours Kuba

A prestigious velvet, with geometric labyrinths inspired by scarification.

Brown geometric labyrinths stand out against an orange and ochre background: as a band on the square plate, as a band and medallion at the bottom of the large speckled bowl, and all around the mug. This breakfast set is our tribute to the iconic "Kuba Velvet" fabric, reinterpreted under the name "Ntshak". "Ntshak" is the name of the raffia cloth worn by Kuba women (DR Congo).

🌀 The history of the pattern

In the Kuba kingdom, in Kasai, Shoowa men weave palm fiber and women embroider it into velvet, following geometric labyrinths inspired by scarification: pieces so precious that they served as currency or covered the royal throne.

  • Ntshak (DR Congo, Kuba): the raffia cloth of Kuba women.
  • Kasai Velvet (DR Congo): raffia fabrics that Shoowa men weave and women embroider.

✨ What the pattern tells

The value of patient work is seen in a velvet that can take from several months to a year. These prestigious fabrics were given as gifts or used as currency.

Our reinterpretation

On porcelain, the labyrinths of Kuba Velvet become a band for the square plate, an inner band and a medallion at the bottom of the large speckled bowl, and a band around the mug. The orange, ochre, brown, and white colors structure the whole. The pieces are decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, with the pattern prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing. The packaging box accompanies the set.

At your table

At the time when the light glides over a textured tablecloth, the box brings together the morning gestures around warm colors. To give to someone who loves pieces inspired by a story of patience and prestige.
