Breakfast box, Gamaphone wax print – the Gramophone

In Benin, it is called “Gamaphone”: it is the word for gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.

On the plate, a large brown and ochre dot pattern with a burgundy center; the large speckled bowl features a circle of brown dots on a lemon-yellow background, accented with purple, and the mug carries the same patterns on the outside. We pay tribute to the iconic “Gramophone” fabric with our reinterpretation, named “Gamaphone.” “Gamaphone” is how “gramophone” is pronounced in Fon (Benin), where the R is not pronounced.

🎶 One pattern, a thousand names

Discs of small dots arranged in concentric circles, like the grooves of a vinyl record: this fabric evokes the gramophone, the king of parties in days gone by. In the world of wax fabric, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give the patterns their names.

• Gamaphone (Benin, Fon): the record player, the gramophone; its concentric circles evoke the grooves of a record.

✨ What the pattern tells

Music, parties, and the atmosphere of evenings when records spin. A joyful, rhythmic pattern made of circles that seem to vibrate. It accompanies gatherings and is perfect for sharing a festive atmosphere.

Our reinterpretation

On the plate, the pattern unfolds in a large central disc; in the speckled bowl, it is placed at the bottom and in an inner band; on the mug, it adorns the outside. The colors—lemon yellow, brown, ochre, purple, burgundy, and white—give the design a warm vibrancy. The gift box brings these three pieces together. Each piece is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, with the pattern prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table

Imagine the light of late morning, a raw linen tablecloth, and guests taking their time around the table. The Gamaphone box slips into this setting like background music and becomes a gift idea to celebrate a party or a gathering.
