Set of 12 square plates, Adinkra pattern

In Ghana, the Gye Nyame symbol means “except God”: nothing is above him.

On each square plate, a vibrant checkerboard pattern covers the entire surface: red, orange, yellow, and blue diamonds alternate with black Adinkra symbols. Sky blue, navy blue, black, and white structure this weaving-inspired composition. This set of 12 plates is our tribute to the iconic “Adinkra” fabric.

✦ The history of the pattern

Adinkra symbols are a visual language of the Akan people in Ghana. They can be found on fabrics, jewelry, and architecture, serving as proverbs worn on one’s person.

• Adinkra (Ghana, Akan): a visual language in which each symbol represents a proverb or philosophical idea.
• Gye Nyame (Ghana, Akan): “except God”: the symbol of divine omnipotence, one of the most widespread.

✨ What the pattern tells

Humility and wisdom permeate this Akan visual language in Ghana: each Adinkra symbol carries a proverb. This pattern is designed to convey a proverb and keep a word of wisdom close at hand.

Our interpretation

The fabric’s checkerboard becomes a full-surface pattern covering each square plate. The red, orange, and yellow diamonds complement the blue ones, while the black Adinkra symbols punctuate the surface in spirals and crosses. Each piece is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, with the pattern prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing. The plates are presented in two 31 × 31 × 10 cm boxes.

At your table

In the soft light of a morning or dinner, on a linen tablecloth, the colorful diamonds bring rhythm to a shared table. As a gift, the Adinkra pattern represents humility and wisdom: a thoughtful present with a proverb to pass on.
