Speckled mug, Adire pattern – Indigo, indigo blue color, interior decor

Speckled mug, Adire pattern – Indigo, indigo blue color, interior decor

White suns appear where the dye has not taken.

Beneath the white pebbled exterior, the inside of the mug plunges into a deep indigo blue, veined with white like knotted and dyed fabric. We pay tribute to the iconic "Indigo" fabric with our reinterpretation named "Adire". "Adire" means "to tie and dye" in Yoruba (Nigeria): it is the name of fabrics dyed in indigo using a resist technique.

💙 The history of the pattern

In Abeokuta, Nigeria, Yoruba women have made adire an art: the fabric is tied, folded, or protected with cassava paste, then dipped in indigo, and white suns appear where the dye has not taken.

  • Adire (Nigeria (Yoruba)): "to tie and dye": fabrics dyed in indigo, whose patterns arise from the tied or protected parts.

✨ What the pattern tells

The deep blue of indigo is a color of prestige. The pattern also carries the story of a know-how passed down from mother to daughter.

Our reinterpretation

The design is seen on the inside of the mug, while the white pebbled exterior retains a textured surface; the chosen colors are indigo blue, midnight blue, and white. This mug is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, with the pattern prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table

In the morning, on a light linen tablecloth, the light brings out the deep blue and pebbled texture of the mug. As a gift, it evokes a know-how passed down from mother to daughter and the prestigious color of indigo.
