Textured mug, Bogolan pattern

A Malian cotton fabric whose geometric signs tell ancestral stories.

Beneath a white stippled exterior, the mug opens to a burgundy, ochre, orange and cream geometric design: diamonds, crosses and radiating chevrons. The pattern is read on the inside of the piece, like a subtle echo of Bogolan fabric. This mug is our tribute to this iconic fabric.

Bogolan is a traditional Malian cotton fabric, dyed with fermented mud, whose geometric signs tell ancestral stories. Each region has its style, from the Dogon country to Ségou.

• Bogolan (Mali, Bambara): also called bògòlanfini.

✨ What the pattern tells

Bogolan has become a symbol of Malian cultural identity. A custom says that it absorbs the dangerous forces released during a birth. It is given as a gift to evoke this cultural identity and the custom related to births that accompanies it.

Our reinterpretation

The design leaves the surface of the fabric to unfold inside the mug: diamonds, crosses and radiating chevrons in burgundy, ochre, orange and cream, facing the white stippled exterior. This mug is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, pattern prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table

At the time of a hot drink, on a light linen tablecloth, the light brings out the diamonds and chevrons inside the mug. Given as a gift, it evokes Malian cultural identity and the custom related to births that surrounds Bogolan.
