▤ The history of the pattern

In Niger, these narrow woven bands, sewn edge to edge, feature stepped patterns and checkerboards that tell the stories of great ceremonies. Kanta, in Djerma, and Kounta, in Hausa, are two different patterns.

• Kanta (Niger, Djerma): a pattern intended for the newlywed couple during wedding ceremonies.
• Kounta (Niger, Hausa): a different pattern, used as a rug or wall covering.

Kanta and Kounta tell the stories of life's major milestones, especially marriage. The pattern is thus linked to the moments that mark a life. It can accompany a gift intended to celebrate a wedding or a major milestone.

Our reinterpretation

On this mug, the black-and-white stepped patterns become a band that wraps around the piece, bordered by mustard yellow, green, and blue stripes. The weaving is reflected in the arrangement of the design and the rhythm of the colors. Each mug is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop: the pattern is prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.
