🎭 The story of the design

Among the Dan, in western Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia, a spirit may appear in a dream to ask for a mask to be carved for it. Masks with feminine features, such as the Deangle, are benevolent.

• Dan (Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia): also called Yacouba.
• Deangle (Côte d’Ivoire (Dan)): a benevolent spirit with feminine features, an oval face and almond-shaped eyes.

✨ What the design tells

For the Dan, the mask allows spirits to take part in the lives of men. The design thus recalls that the spiritual can take place in the world of the living.

Our reinterpretation

The drawing leaves the mask to settle on the side of the mug: black and grey on white porcelain, with a fine grey border at the base. The Dan mask with the framed face shows a dark face with full features. It is set in a frame sculpted with geometric ornaments, like an icon. Decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, the design is prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.

When the light fades, place the mug on a light linen tablecloth, for a quiet moment for two or more. Given to someone sensitive to stories and symbols, it evokes the place that spirits take in the lives of men among the Dan.
