In Benin, in Goun, it is called “Azin tchro”: peanut shells.
A wide band of stylized, interlocking peanut shells adorns the entire mug. Brown, rust, and mauve complement each other, supported by ochre and white, in a weave reminiscent of a basket. This is our tribute to the iconic “Arachides” fabric, a reinterpretation we have named “Azin Tchro” (“Azin tchro” means “peanut shells” in Goun (Benin)).
🥜 One motif, a thousand names
Stylized peanut shells, lined up and interlocking like in a woven basket: this pagne belongs to the great family of wax fabrics inspired by the table and harvests. In the world of wax, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give them their names.
-
Arachides (French-speaking West Africa): the name under which this pagne is known
-
Azin tchro (Benin, in Goun): peanut shells
✨ What the motif tells
The peanut is a staple crop of West Africa, shared at the table and in the markets. This motif belongs to the “à table!” pagne family, which celebrates what we grow and what we share. It thus accompanies the moments when we gather around the table what we have grown and what we share.
Our reinterpretation
On this mug, the motif becomes a wide band around the piece: the stylized peanut shells cross in brown, rust, and mauve, with ochre and white for accents, woven like a basket. Each mug is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, motif prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.
At your table
At coffee or tea time, on a light linen tablecloth, this mug brings the warm hues of brown, rust, and mauve to a shared table. As a gift, it accompanies the idea of staple crops and sharing carried by the peanut, to give to someone who loves to gather people around the table.
