Square bowl, Kanta and Kounta pattern, blue color

Two motifs from Niger, one Djerma, the other Hausa, for life's major milestones.

The square salad bowl is crossed by a wide band of woven design: striped steel-blue squares, brown and white chevrons and diamonds, in steel-blue, brown, black and white. This porcelain piece is our tribute to the iconic "Kanta and Kounta" fabric, whose narrow bands and checkerboards tell the stories of major ceremonies. It takes this textile narrative and brings it to life at the table.

▤ The history of the motif

In Niger, these narrow woven bands sewn edge to edge feature crenellations and checkerboards that tell the stories of major ceremonies.

• Kanta (Niger, Djerma): a motif intended for the young bride or groom during wedding ceremonies.
• Kounta (Niger, Hausa): a different motif, used as a rug or wall covering.

✨ What the motif tells

Life's major milestones, and marriage first and foremost: this is what Kanta and Kounta represent. These motifs are designed to accompany these moments, echoing their symbolism.

Our interpretation

The wide band of woven design crosses the square salad bowl, featuring striped steel-blue squares, brown and white chevrons and diamonds, in steel-blue, brown, black and white. The salad bowl is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville; the motif is prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing. It is presented in a gift box.

At your table

On a light tablecloth, in the soft evening light, the square salad bowl brings guests together around a simple table. As a gift, it accompanies a wedding or a major milestone in life, echoing the symbolism of the motif.
