Coffee cup and saucer, Adire pattern – Indigo, indigo blue color

The deep blue of indigo, a color of prestige.

On the cup, a plum and indigo band crosses the porcelain, punctuated by sky-blue suns; the saucer features a wide ring. This coffee cup and saucer are our tribute to the iconic "Indigo" fabric, a reinterpretation we have named "Adire". "Adire" means "tie and dye" in Yoruba (Nigeria): it is the name of fabrics dyed in indigo using a resist method.

💙 The history of the pattern

In Abeokuta, Nigeria, Yoruba women have made adire an art: the fabric is tied, folded, or protected with cassava paste, then dipped in indigo, and white suns appear where the dye did not take.

• Adire (Nigeria, Yoruba): "tie and dye": fabrics dyed in indigo, whose patterns emerge from the tied or protected areas.

✨ What the pattern tells

The deep blue of indigo, a color of prestige, gives the piece a composed presence. The pattern recalls a know-how passed down from mother to daughter. It is perfect for accompanying a gesture of transmission, between mother and daughter.

Our reinterpretation

On this cup, the plum and indigo band is crossed by sky-blue suns, while a wide ring encircles the saucer. This piece is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, with the pattern prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.

In the morning light, on a linen tablecloth, the cup takes its place among the guests and reveals its sky-blue suns. As a gift, it accompanies those who pass down a gesture or a story from mother to daughter.
