On the cup, a Dan mask with long braids is drawn in black and grey pencil on a white background; the saucer is bordered by a black geometric frieze. The 9 cl cup and its 12 cm diameter saucer form a coffee set. This piece is our tribute to the iconic "Dan Masks".

🎭 The story of the motif

Among the Dan, in western Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, a spirit may appear in a dream to ask that a mask be carved for it. Masks with feminine features, such as the Deangle, are benevolent.

For the Dan, the mask allows spirits, the "ge", to take part in the lives of men. The mask is thus linked to this participation of spirits in the lives of men.

Our reinterpretation

On the cup, the mask unfolds in black and grey pencil; on the saucer, a black geometric frieze accompanies the set. The mask drawn on this piece is the Dan Mask with a braided headdress. Its Dan face has a domed forehead, slit eyes and full lips. A headdress of long braids frames this face and falls down to the chin. This cup and its saucer are decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, the motif prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.
