Coffee cup and saucer, Baoulé crested portrait mask

Harmony and attention to detail.

The cup features a portrait mask drawn in charcoal grey and black on the white porcelain; the saucer is edged with a black and grey geometric border. The whole piece reads like a small painting on the table, where the serene face of the mask echoes the geometry of the saucer. It is our tribute to the iconic "Baoulé" art.

🐘 The story of the motif

Baoulé art, from Côte d'Ivoire, seeks harmony and attention to detail; its portrait masks honor a real person.

• Baoulé (Côte d'Ivoire): a people whose art seeks harmony and attention to detail.

✨ What the motif tells

The Baoulé motif evokes harmony and refinement. The elephant, emblem of Côte d'Ivoire, adds strength and wisdom. This motif is offered to express the harmony and refinement of a bond, with the elephant as a symbol of strength and wisdom.

Our reinterpretation

The motif transitions from Baoulé art to this piece through the mask drawn on the cup, in charcoal grey and black, and through the black and grey geometric border edging the saucer. The mask depicted is the Baoulé portrait mask with a crest: an oval, smooth face with half-closed eyes, a thin nose, and a small mouth, topped with a sculpted crest. It embodies the calm and refinement of Baoulé portrait masks. The cup and saucer are decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, with the motif prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.
