Coffee cup and saucer, Senufo zoomorphic mask with a tapered profile

The strength of the animals of the bush at the service of the community.

On the cup, a zoomorphic mask with a long sculpted face is drawn in black and grey pencil; the saucer, white, is bordered by a black geometric frieze. Black, grey and white make up this design. This coffee cup and its saucer are our tribute to the iconic mask "Senufo zoomorphic mask".

🎭 The history of the mask

Among the Senufo of northern Côte d’Ivoire, many masks borrow their features from animals: horns, beaks, jaws. They appear during ceremonies related to the initiation society.

✨ What the pattern tells

The symbolism of the pattern links the strength of the animals of the bush to the community. It also speaks of the link between the world of men and that of the spirits. Through these two ideas, the piece becomes a gift that evokes a shared strength and a dialogue between worlds.

Our reinterpretation

The pattern leaves the mask to settle on the cup, while the saucer receives a black geometric frieze. The black and grey of the drawing stand out on the white of the porcelain. The mask drawn on the cup is the "Senufo zoomorphic mask with a tapered profile": a narrow and vertical mask, with a tapered profile like a beak, topped with a crest. Its slender silhouette stands between man and bird. Decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, the cup and its saucer receive a pattern prepared, placed and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table
