👑 The history of Toghu

Toghu is the traditional attire of the Grassfields in North-West Cameroon, around Bamenda: black velvet embroidered with yellow, orange, red, and white threads. Once reserved for kings and dignitaries, it has become Cameroon's ceremonial attire at major international events. Its exact origin remains uncertain; some sources associate it with the 19th century and the Bamoun kingdom.

Its embroidery can take several weeks, or even several months; a Toghu is often passed down from generation to generation.

✨ What the pattern tells

Toghu evokes the rank, dignity, and pride of the peoples of the Grassfields in North-West Cameroon; once reserved for kings, chiefs, and dignitaries. Today, it carries a symbol of Cameroonian identity and unity. It can be found at weddings, parties, and major international ceremonies.

Our reinterpretation

On the porcelain, black envelops the cup; the orange and ochre crosses echo the touches of white, and a matching band crosses the saucer like an embroidered trim. The cup and its saucer are decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville: the pattern is prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.

On a light tablecloth, in the morning light, the black cup and its orange and ochre band add character to a coffee shared with family or friends. As a gift, it accompanies a wedding or a special occasion, echoing the rank, dignity, and pride carried by Toghu.
