Coffee cup and saucer, Gamaphone wax print, grey and yellow colorway

In Benin, it is called “Gamaphone”: it is the gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.

On the cup, a grey eagle head with a yellow beak gazes intensely; the saucer surrounds it with a crown of ochre and grey dot discs, crossed by orange flashes, on a white background. This set is our tribute to the iconic “Gramophone” fabric, a reinterpretation we have named “Gamaphone”: in Benin, in Fon, “gramophone” is pronounced this way, without the R.

🎶 One pattern, a thousand names

Discs of small dots arranged in concentric circles, like the grooves of a vinyl record: this pagne evokes the gramophone, the king of parties in days gone by. In the world of wax, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give the patterns their names.

• Gamaphone (Benin, Fon): the record player, the gramophone; its concentric circles evoke the grooves of a disc.
• Discs: the same design evokes discs.

✨ What the pattern tells

This pattern evokes music, parties, and the atmosphere of evenings when records are spinning. Its circles seem to vibrate and give rhythm to the room.

Our reinterpretation

On this coffee cup, the grey eagle head with a yellow beak stands out against a white background; the saucer takes up the ochre and grey dot discs, crossed by orange flashes, like an echo of the concentric circles of the Gramophone. This set is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville: the pattern is prepared, applied, and enameled by hand before firing.

At your table

For a morning or end-of-day break, the cup finds its place on a light linen tablecloth, in soft light, surrounded by a few loved ones. A gift for someone who loves music and parties, to bring a joyful rhythm to their table.
