In Benin, it is called “Gamaphone”: it is the gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.
On the cup, a large disc of brown dots winds around the porcelain in a solid pattern, with a burgundy heart on an olive green and mustard yellow background; the saucer echoes its ring-shaped crown. The white allows the circles to breathe. This duo is our tribute to the iconic “Gramophone” fabric, a reinterpretation we have named “Gamaphone”.
🎶 One pattern, a thousand names
Discs of small dots arranged in concentric circles, like the grooves of a vinyl record: this fabric evokes the gramophone, the king of parties of yesteryear. In the world of wax, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give them their names.
-
Gamaphone (Benin, Fon): the record player, the gramophone; its concentric circles evoke the grooves of a disc.
-
Discs: the same design evokes discs.
✨ What the pattern tells
Music, parties, and the atmosphere of evenings where records spin permeate this pattern. Its circles seem to vibrate and give the piece a joyful rhythm. It is a pattern to give as a gift to share an atmosphere of party and music.
Our reinterpretation
On this cup, the large disc of brown dots winds around the piece in a solid pattern, with a burgundy heart on an olive green and mustard yellow background; the saucer echoes the ring-shaped crown. This cup is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, the pattern prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.
At your table
Imagine a soft late afternoon light, a natural linen tablecloth and a few guests gathered around a coffee. This cup also fits into a gift for a music lover or to celebrate a party.
