Coffee cup and saucer, “My Rival’s Evil Eye” wax print

“The eyes see, but the mouth does not speak”: this is the proverb evoked by this fabric, also known as My Co-Wife’s Eye. A popular West African proverb in French.

On the cup, a stylized eye keeps watch amidst sky-blue and pink wavy lines, between two bands of yellow and navy blue lattice. The saucer features a matching lattice ring, with white space allowing the design to breathe. We pay tribute to the iconic “My Rival’s Eye” fabric without reproducing it.

👁️ One design, a thousand names

A wide-open eye surrounded by circles and wavy lines: this fabric humorously speaks of romantic rivalries, and is often chosen for the message it conveys. In the world of wax fabric, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics who give these designs their names.

• My Rival’s Eye (French-speaking West Africa): worn by a woman determined not to share her husband.
• My Co-Wife’s Eye (French-speaking West Africa): it refers to the proverb “The eyes see, but the mouth does not speak”: an invitation to discretion and patience.

✨ What the design tells us

This design speaks of vigilance and a watchful eye. It also carries a mischievous message: we see everything, but we say nothing.

Our interpretation

We have taken the stylized eye and wavy lines on the cup, in sky blue and pink, between two bands of yellow and navy blue lattice. The saucer features a matching lattice ring on a white background. This coffee cup and saucer are decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, with the design prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing.
