Teacup and saucer, Adire pattern – Indigo

Teacup and saucer, Adire pattern – Indigo

White suns appear where the dye has not taken.

The wide plum and indigo blue band around the cup stands out against the white porcelain, while the saucer features a matching ring. The flared cup evokes the reflections of the dye, and the set pays tribute to the iconic "Indigo" fabric. We have named our interpretation "Adire": "Adire" means "tie and dye" in Yoruba (Nigeria), and it is the name of fabrics dyed in indigo using a resist technique.

💙 The history of the pattern

In Abeokuta, Nigeria, Yoruba women have made adire an art form: the fabric is tied, folded, or protected with a cassava paste, then dipped in indigo, and white suns appear where the dye has not taken.

  • Adire (Nigeria (Yoruba)): "tie and dye": fabrics dyed in indigo, whose patterns emerge from the tied or protected areas.

✨ What the pattern tells

The deep blue of indigo is a prestigious color. The pattern also tells the story of expertise passed down from mother to daughter.

Our interpretation

On the cup, the wide plum and indigo blue band echoes the resist techniques of indigo; on the saucer, a matching ring extends the pattern. The white of the porcelain allows the contrasts to breathe. The cup and saucer are decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, with the pattern prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing.

At your table

In the late afternoon, in the soft light on a light linen tablecloth, the cup adds a touch of plum and indigo among the guests. A gift to pass on expertise and a prestigious color, like a gesture from mother to daughter.
