Teacup and saucer, Gamaphone wax print – the Gramophone

In Benin, it is called "Gamaphone": it is the gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.

The flared teacup is covered with brown dots on a mustard yellow background, punctuated by a burgundy half-disc; the saucer takes up this ring crown. We pay tribute to the iconic "Gramophone" fabric with our reinterpretation named "Gamaphone". In Fon (Benin), "Gamaphone" is the way "gramophone" is pronounced, where the R is not pronounced.

🎶 One pattern, a thousand names

Discs of small dots arranged in concentric circles, like the grooves of a vinyl record: this pagne evokes the gramophone, the king of parties of yesteryear. In the world of wax, it is the market women and those who wear the fabrics that give them their name.

Our reinterpretation

On the cup, the pattern becomes full: the brown dots on a mustard yellow background and the burgundy half-disc draw a round around the piece. The saucer takes up this ring rhythm, with the mustard yellow, brown, burgundy, olive green, and white palette. Decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville, the cup and its saucer are prepared; the pattern is prepared, placed, and glazed by hand before firing.
