Niger Collection: Kanta, Kounta and Téra-téra

In Niger, narrow strips of cotton fabric featuring crenellated and tightly checkered patterns are woven and sewn together. They tell the story of life’s major milestones, marriage foremost among them.

Three fabrics, three roles

  • Kanta: among the Djerma, the fabric worn by the groom.
  • Téra-téra: among the Djerma, the fabric that covers the bride to protect and honor her.
  • Kounta: among the Hausa, a woven blanket that also serves as a rug or wall hanging.

In the collection

Sets of 6 square plates in black and mustard yellow or blue, with or without an elephant, square salad bowls, mugs and breakfast sets, as well as our Tera Tera oval plates. On the porcelain, the woven strips become a graphic border running across the plate. Each piece is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop: the design is prepared, applied and glazed by hand before firing. Colors, first name, date or short message: it can be personalized on request, and a broken piece can be replaced individually.
