Collection: West African Masks Collection

From portrait masks to helmet masks, West Africa has created a thousand faces. They connect the living, the ancestors, and the spirits; they dance at funerals, initiations, and harvest festivals. Our designs are inspired by pieces preserved in museums, and each piece features a specific mask, along with its name.

The masks in the collection

  • Dan masks (Ivory Coast, Liberia): Deangle with its beaded necklace or goatee, Zakpai with its half-closed eyes, Gunye Ge, the racing mask… Among the Dan, a spirit may appear in a dream to ask that a mask be carved for it.
  • Wanyugo helmet masks (Senufo): they combine the most fearsome animals into a single head to protect the community.
  • Kpélié, Senufo zoomorphic masks, and Baule portrait: beauty, the memory of the ancestors, harmony.
  • And the Masks and Traditions collection, a gallery of African faces on square plates and glasses.

Choosing your mask

Everyone chooses the one that touches them or resembles them: one mug per person, one mask per character. Upon request, we can draw a different mask, add a first name, or a date. Each piece is decorated to order in our Alfortville workshop, hand-applied and glazed before firing.
