Gamaphone Collection – the Gramophone

In Benin, it is called “Gamaphone”: it is the word for gramophone, pronounced in the Fon style, without the R.

Discs of tiny dots arranged in concentric circles, like the grooves of a spinning vinyl record: the Gamaphone wax fabric (also spelled Gammaphone) recalls the parties of yesteryear, when the turntable set the tone for the evening. Our collection makes these circles dance on the plate, cup, and bowl.

A pattern with rhythm

Music, atmosphere, the joy of coming together: Gamaphone is a cheerful pattern made of rosettes that seem to vibrate. In our collection, it comes in very different colorways—brown and rust, olive and mustard, orange and ochre, purple, gray and yellow, black—as a ring around the edge of the plate, in a band, or as an all-over pattern.

In the collection

  • Sets of 6 round or square plates and sets of 12 plates, for a festive table.
  • Coffee and tea cups with saucers, to be mixed or matched in different colors.
  • Speckled bowls, decorated on the inside, and a breakfast set.

Each piece is decorated to order in our workshop in Alfortville: the pattern is prepared, applied, and glazed by hand before firing. Colors, first name, date, or short message: it can be personalized upon request, and a broken piece can be replaced individually.
